Illustrations are fun to look and and try to figure out how on earth an artist could visualize that scene on a single piece of paper and then cut it out using only a single sheet of paper. I liked the "earthiness" of the verse.

Certainly not my cup of tea since I'm not devoutly religious but the illustrations were beautiful.

This is absolutely gorgeous in every way. I've seen other reviewers complain about the original text of Saint Francis of Assisi being dumbed down for it, though. First, he wrote this in his native Umbrian dialect, which would be inaccessible to most of today's readers, and it has since been translated into Modern English. Second, this is a picture book, meant for anyone but especially little children who are just grasping the English language. I'm all for changing up a poem if it's to make it more accessible to younger readers. That accessibility is what's important here, along with the message the book contains.

The illustrations are a 5+, Paterson's words are beautiful, just a little too religious for me....I know, I know, that shouldn't impact my rating, but it does....

Simone picked this book at the library, and since I thought the illustrations were appealing, like beautiful old tapestries, I simply put it in my bag without realizing it was st. Assisi's canticle of creatures. My husband was amused that I decided to read it anyway, and to my surprise it was quite fascinating, and the illustrations were marvelous. The babes spent more time picking out the different animals and objects in the pictures than, I think, listening, but altogether enjoyable.
