Get to the point already, this copy had 319 pages, something finally happened in the 290’s. This book was gross at times, and incredibly boring.

I have no idea why I liked this. But I did. Eileen is a character unlike any other - she’s disturbing, raw, disgusting, and deplorable yet I felt so strongly for her. This book has basically no plot until the last 30ish pages but it didn’t even need one. Eileen herself is the story. The only book I can compare it to is Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine but I still don’t feel it’s a totally accurate comparison. Hats off to you Ottessa Moshfegh for creating such a memorable character in Eileen.

Bleak. You know it is all headed somewhere awful, but you keep reading. Then it all unfolds. The writing is perfect. It is like Bela Tarr and Catherine Breillat filmed a Patricia Highsmith story.

Eileen is a pretty damn dark book for sixteen-year-olds. Take some Gillian Flynne and some Patricia Highsmith, mix it up with a self-loathing coming-of-age story that seems to promise a shocking ending. There's alcoholism, child abuse, stalking, and lesbianism. It's all very dark. Except, it isn't. I actually really related to this book and liked what the author was going for but it's written like a kid's book. I can see the appeal, these dark, psychological heroines are simplified and put in nice little bite-sized packages. But it's just slick YA in the end.

Good start. The middle lasted 12,495 years. Page 222 and beyond had my jaw unhinged from my body.

I’m shocked that it had so many positive reviews. The first 80% of the book is the same thing over and over and over again. The only real even of the book is about 1 chapter and even that wasn’t super interesting. Definitely not a captivating read for me, I kept thinking it would get better but never did. I have no idea how this was considered a thriller. No twist, no turn of events.

This book was a pretty immaculate character study. Eileen is pathetic and terrible and fascinating to live within for a large majority of the book. I’ve never read a perspective like hers, and enjoyed the way her self loathing felt very true to form - human. Her obsession too with Rebecca felt very real, and I loved her future self’s reflections on love versus obsession.
In general the final 30 pages when the act we have been building to finally appears, I felt lost. It seemed so unusual and out of left field for what had been a pretty simple story until then, despite the language. I feel completely removed from the story the moment the climax hits, and for that reason can’t rank it as high as I wish I could.
Overall, great writing and a fun, if not loathsome, main character.
