I usually love stories about this time period but was very disappointed in this. A bunch of miserable characters who are fairly one-note. The main mystery took forever to develop then wasn't terribly suspenseful. The circumstances and environments were relatively generic, with oppression, police bureaucracy and prison camp scenes you've all seen before.
It bothered me that the name of the country was never specified. This is a very specific time in history and area of the world so there are only a few candidates. Historical accuracy might have given the story a little more cred. Otherwise it feels as though the author just didn't do the necessary research.

Grimmmer than I thought it would be, in interesting and less interesting ways.

An interesting variant of the police procedural, political thriller.
