I wish I was really good at hyping books up, because I do not understand why this book has so many one star ratings. I laughed when I saw the cover, thinking what kind of sharp toothed sheep is that & then wondering if Brenda identifies as a sheep.

Let's just say Brenda is sneaky and ended up getting won over. Brenda was trying to infiltrate the sheep so she could get an easy meal. Her shenanigans led to the sheep really liking her and wanting to be as cunning and active as she was.

Overall it turned into a great friendship. I also found the illustrations very entertaining, educational (there is counting), and adorable.

Brenda is a sheep, or is she? She loves her sheep friends so much, she is even cooking up some mint sauce for them.

I loved the story, though the kids did not get the mint sauce part (we are not big lamb eaters anyway). Actually all 4 of them wanted me to read the story to them, which is quite an event in itself!

Humourous and fun book. Could definitely be analysed as transphobic by a cynic but otherwise a fun rendering of 'a wolf in sheep's clothing'.
All in present tense and with English translation underneath which will hopefully be good for second language beginners.

I feel like this book is like a pixar movie, a funny, seemingly innocuous story that is hiding quite a bit more under the surface if you want to see it. But....maybe I'm reading too much into it? What I'm certainly not seeing is the reason for the moral panic it seems to have inspired from the One star "BUT STRANGER DANGER!!!" crowd.
In the words of my 6 year old, " It's funny because Brenda isn't a sheep!" Since she is the intended audience and not the adults that seem certain this book will somehow erode their children's ability to see any danger around them, I'll take her word for it and not theirs.
Also cute illustrations and knitting!!

The hullabaloo over this book is so highly entertaining that it makes me wonder where all this righteous indignation has been for other similar stories that have come out over the years ("Buddy and the Bunnies in: Don't Play With Your Food" by Bob Shea comes to mind).

Mischievous twist on the ol' wolf in sheeps' clothing tale.

What an odd little book. Brenda is a sheep, even though she looks, dresses, talks, and acts like a wolf. The sheep become enamored with Brenda the woof-sheep. Even when Brenda does things that will seriously injure the sheep (trying to shoot them with arrows, trying to cook them, etc.), they still think Brenda is the best thing since sliced bread.

The sheep think Brenda is probably
the best sheep they have ever met…

All the sheep want to be just like Brenda.

I’m not sure exactly what to make of this book. If you go to Goodreads and see the large number of 1-star ratings, along with all the negative comments, you’d think it’s downright terrible. And perhaps it is. But as I was reading it, I began wondering if it’s intended to be commentary on the current state of US politics (since it was first published in 2019 and slightly altered and republished in 2020). Many of Hood’s stories concern relationships, prejudice, and inclusion, so I don’t know — if you read this one, let me know what you think.

Bright illustrations. I was real nervous about the concept of this one - "character that looks like X but identifies as Y but is actually secretly still X, and also, dangerous". I get that it's a whole sheep in wolf's clothing thing and am trying not to read too much into it, but it's tough not to, with adult eyes. Could have turned out worse. That's all I got.
