If you have ever thought or uttered the phrases, “Why did they never say anything?” or “Why would they wait so long to say something? Why now?” then you need to sit down and read this book.

Look. This was absolutely heartbreaking to read, yet validating all at once. It is an absolute must-read for all, men and women alike. Read it even if you already consider yourself an advocate for assault victims and especially if you don’t.

The author walks through not only the horrific event that occurred, but also the joke of the system procedures to gain “justice” and the emotional upheaval it all had on her, her family, and those who were present that night. She speaks plainly on the problems within our culture that made it so easy for people to be victimized by assault and again by the critique of who they are as a person and their value if they try to seek legal justice. There’s no question why most just live silently in their pain.

This was an extremely powerful and well-written memoir I will recommend over and over to people in my life.

There isn't much that I can add to what previous reviews have already said. This is a monumental book, raw and heart-wrenching, so masterfully written. I was moved to tears and moved to absolute rage at the pain inflicted, the injustice, the added abuse caused by the judicial system.

I'm so grateful that Chanel Miller was able to make her voice heard and share her truth. I hope that her words can reach anyone in need of strength, validation and understanding.

Chanel Miller provoked a visercal response from me with her book. She took me on a painful journey in such vivid detail that I felt as if I was a ghost who she was leading by the hand through this part of her life. Not only did she do this most eloquently,  but she achieved what I saw as her ultimate goal - making victims seen as individuals, their trauma at the end of a long list of what has made up their lives, of who they are as PEOPLE. I do not think “I read about Chanel Miller, who is a victim of assault.” I think “Chanel Miller writes so beautifully, and makes such interesting art. Chanel Miller is such a ferociously loving sister. I cant believe she did stand up comedy - how cool is that!” To me, she is an intricate, interesting woman who I would love to know.

Not that she would ever see this, but I closed this book whispering a string of thank yous to her.

There are ugly realities we shy away from. Some truths are too hard to bear, process, think about, solve, talk about, and write about. The only way we can cope is by ignoring reality. When we do this, we hurt ourselves and others. Sometimes, we need to do more. We need to be better. This book was like a dive headfirst into a pool in the middle of winter. I knew what this book was going to be about and supported her even as Emily Doe. It is still hard to process that everyday people are sexually abused, hurt, defiled, broken. I hate that this is even a thing; I hate that it's normalized. I hate that victims can't feel safe confronting their attacker. This hate turns into anger and then into sadness, which is when we start distracting ourselves. Because this anger, this hate, can eat us up and leave us as a smoking shell of a person. It took me 18 days to finish this book, and I am glad that I did. For anyone in a similar place as Chanel/Emily, I want to know how to help and comfort and support. Victims, survivors are never alone, even when they feel like it. I and so many others want to be there for them. This book has to be a must-read for everyone, especially for anyone involved in the legal system.

Chanel Miller's story deserves to be heard and is one of the most honest and truthful accounts of sexual assault survivors' journey in and out of the courtroom. It took me 18 days to finish because I would become depressed, shaken, angry, upset at everything she was going through. She writes in a way that makes me feel her pain; every attack and question goes straight to my core. Read this book; you'll learn so much.

Look at trigger warnings.
