Oh gosh, was this book dark. And atmospheric, and chilling. With elements of Gothic fantasy (many, MANY disturbing family secrets, vengeful merfolk, and not one but TWO creepy old houses) that sometimes border on horror, this book was not what I expected. Miren is an excellent antihero- protag who tries to do what she thinks is right but isn’t afraid to do what she must to survive. The writing is beautiful, and A.G. Slatter does an amazing job of world building (and the ending – WOW). I look forward to reading more books by this author.

This is an intriguing and atmospheric fantasy novel. The story revolves around Miren, a young woman and the last scion of a once powerful family. After the disappearance of her parents and the death of her grandmother, she finds herself entangled in a dark and dangerous family legacy. The blend of folklore, magic, and mystery creates a captivating backdrop for the narrative.

Miren's determination and growth throughout the story are the novel's strongest point - Miren is a captivating heroine and I wanted to know what happened to her.

The plot and the pacing, unfortunately, are all over the place, and I felt I was reading two different stories stuck together.

Overall, Slatter presented the readers with an intricate world and engaging characters, but the pacing and plot could be better. Still, this is a charming, easy read for fans of dark fantasy
