slight fantasy aspect? Good book tho, a lot of different storylines that all ended up connecting really well. gruesome at times tho with the descriptions of the surgeries.
so he’s not dead? but then if she didn’t take the solution too, then she’ll die and he’ll live on? guess thats why there is a sequel

Good, dragged in the middle a bit but was great by the end. Also I personally feel like this was more of a well written fiction with love than an outright love story.

What starts as a story about a young woman trying to defy class and society expectations to be a surgeon in the 1800’s in Scotland becomes a bit more of a morality tale and a story of young love. Honestly, the love story here was tangential to the rest. Hazel is a powerhouse, learning how to just say f*@k it and go after what she truly wants. Jack is a good counterpoint, young and brash and an easy companion for Hazel as she works in the trenches to learn her craft. The depiction of early medicine is both fascinating and cringeworthy, as any depiction of the early days of medicine is. But in this story the pursuit of medical knowledge is tinged with a bit of the fantastical in the concept of immortality (tied to classism and the idea of who should get this sort of “honor”) developed by Dr. Beecham.

The ending was both bittersweet and a bit ambiguous, which I normally don’t love, but here works very much for the darker, gothic aspects of the story.

I love gothic romance, but this was not my cup of tea. The foreshadowing was sometimes heavy handed and sometimes totally missing, felt like some pacing issues. I’ll read the sequel give it another chance!

Wow I really enjoyed this. I need to read the next book asap. I loved Hazel as a character, her and Jack were so cute together. I was expecting the book to be close to a normal historical fiction but it revealed aspects of magical realism towards the end and I love magical realism so much

Cute! I kinda liked the story. It was recommended by a friend of mine and I didn’t quite knew what to expect. I fell in love with Hazel pretty quickly and loved how the story progressed. A nice balance between historian and fantasy book ☺️
