what all quiet on the western front did for ww1 during the entire book, it does only in the last two pages. i think it’s mostly because the structure doesn’t work so well. it’s so overcrowded with metaphors to the point that you get lost in the text.
very heavy on the pessimism that grew during the war. it makes you miserable; they’re 18 and in love, but already telling themselves it won’t last.

that’s all very sweet, tragic etc etc, but sometimes i couldn’t take them very seriously because of the generational gap. wdym you wish your lover was your son????

Tldr; clever, funny, capable teenage Parisian girl dates... just some guy.
