This book started interesting, but never quite picked up for me.  Truly a depressing dystopia, which can sometimes make for a good read, but man, this one's a bummer.  The central mystery wasn't interesting enough for me to slog through the story of mostly bad people doing bad stuff.  Also, the introduction of the eponymous wind-up girl is rough stuff.  I get that the author wanted to convey cruelty and dehumanization in her story, but the detail was unnecessary IMO.

I loved this book, and it was a real breath of fresh air for someone who loves a cyberpunk sci-fi novel. The focus on "biopunk" really helped.

Although the world building was interesting, the pace moved sometimes too slowly and sometimes too quickly, and the most interesting ideas were sometimes skimmed over. There was gratuitous sexual violence which could have been alluded to in a more subtle way
