4 stars, purely because I felt so frustrated for the main character, spending the whole book managing the emotions of a bunch of emotionally stunted men, lmao. Sheesh! Poor Kiera. Between Gage, Henry, and Gage Sr, she barely had time to do anything else! But I did enjoy the book and it was good seeing the relationships develop in this one, especially the focus on Lord Gage senior and his son(s).

Although I love this series and I've been reading every book with the utmost delight, this one didn't work as good as the other ones. It felt long and dragged and nothing happened for almost the entire book. Also the fact that Lady Darby is now an exquisite psycholog on top of the most intuitive person and the one that has all the good ideas and sees through the lines in every conversation. It was a bit too much.

I received this as an ARC from the publisher. Much appreciated, but unfortunately it was DNF for me -- a bit too slow moving for my tastes. I normally really enjoy this series though, so I still plan to buy future books when they become available.

NOOOOO I THOUGHT I WOULD GET A SURPRISE ALLUSION TO DR JAMES BARRY AND INSTEAD I GOT TRANSPHOBIA

It felt like almost accidental transphobia, considering the historical note didn’t misgender him, but boy oh boy feminists tread a very thin line with TERFdom when handling his story, and this was not handled as well as it should have been.

I have always found this series well researched (with a few slip ups here and there) but this one was a huge disappointment.

Overall, this a solid addition to the series. It was nice finally getting to learn more about Lord Gage's character.
