Wow. I absolutely loved this book. I was completely taken in by the main character, who I found extremely lovable despite the
y'know, murder
and I found imagery of animals and animal death to be tragically beautiful.

It reminded me a lot of Shirley Jackson's We Have Always Lived In the Castle (another favourite of mine) in the rituals and idiosyncrasies of its narrators, both of whom believe that outside forces (astrology, magic) will save them. Both narratives never fully decide whether they are right or wrong.

I'd recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a quirky and fun narrator/narrative style, with something extremely dark under the surface.

I don't know if this was the translation or what, but I struggled to finish this book. I just didn't enjoy it, I struggled to track everything outside of the murders, and I found the protagonist obnoxious. I also thought the "mystery" was laughable.

A murder mystery; a strange, curmudgeonly old lady; extended discussions of animal rights, astrology, and the translation of poet William Blake; this novel is a singular experience

This was definitely a weird one for me. It was recommended to me because the old woman is a curmudgeon which is true and I do technically love a curmudgeon. But I’m thinking maybe it just didn’t translate for me into English from Czech? The old woman’s eccentricities I think were what ended up kind of putting me off the book. Her belief in astrology and palm reading and such were just too out there for me. But she does get sweet vengeance in the end so I’m glad I finished it and didn’t just give up on it. But definitely only recommending to friends who love Czech literature and astrology 😝

As soon as I heard the lines “he must have mercury in a reticent sign. I reckon it must be Capricorn in a square or may be in opposition to Saturn. It could also be mercury in retrograde.” I knew I’d be hooked. I think I’ll have to give this one a re-read!
