Gladiators..I did not expect that. Or ashlinn. Or the ending for that matter. Brilliant

I don't like reading fight. I'm not one of those who try to virtualize what's happening when people are fighting. I'm more like skimming those part.

So... a book about gladiator, there is, of course, a lot of fights.

Except of that, all intrigues was interesting. I'm happy I can start the 3rd right away!

There was a lot of interesting plot and character development in this second volume of The Nevernight Chronicle.

Godsgrave is a continuation of Mia Corvere's journey for revenge. The first half of the book jumps back and forth in time between the aftermath of Nevernight / Mia's new mission, and the present-day when Mia is sold as a slave to fight as a gladiator gladiatii as a ploy to get her revenge. As Mia trains to fight in the tournament and win the ultimate gladiatorial battle, she discovers secrets about her family's past and about being a darkin.

I absolutely loved Mia's character development. Mia has somehow grown into an even bigger badass than before - and I'm here for all of it.

Battle tournaments/spectacles are also one of my favourite fantasy tropes and I loved how it was incorporated into this story.

I'm hesitant to give this book 5 stars because there were a few things that bugged me. Hopefully it'll be resolved in the next book, but for now, 4 stars it is. Really looking forward to reading the next book though!

Initial Impressions 4/14/19: 4+ stars
I knew I was in for a while ride when starting GODSGRAVE but Jay Kristoff sure did not skimp on the cliffhanger here! There was definitely a lot that happened towards the end of the book, full of action, surprises, and twists.

While NEVERNIGHT was easily one of my favorite books of last year, I didn't love GODSGRAVE quiiiite as much. The gladiator aspect was fine and enjoyable, but I liked the school setting more, and just the fact that I felt like we got a lot more character development in NEVERNIGHT. There were a lot of interesting things that happened here, although I do still wish we had gotten a few more answers here too. There was a lot to discover and I feel like we could have had a few more teases!

I definitely did not enjoy this as much as I did the first one. Had it just focused on the challenges and the more brutal part of the story and not Mia's lust for everything that moved and the love drama happening on the side, I would have loved it (apparently I'm a bit bloodthirsty). And the footnotes. Oh. My. God, I hate the freaking footnotes but I can't skip them because I'm listening to the audiobook. Many, many times I really wanted to DNF, but I wanted to push on because I heard about a spoiler I was really wanting answers to. And that turned out to be disappointing in itself because it was mentioned at the last minute. The last 20% picked up a little bit, and I was going to continue on with the last book to see how everything panned out. But I just don't think I'm going to; I almost dread picking up the third book, and after looking up some spoilers I know I'm not going to like it. I'm just going to call it quits with this series here before I start reading something I just know my heart won't be into.

Reread 2019:
I had the same experience with this book as the first time I read it!
Love the style of writing, the humour, the characters.
But why so many Gladiator fighting scenes???! They don’t add anything to the main story and just make this book 200 pages longer.
Don’t get me wrong, they’re really well written!
But I WANT MY ANSWERS!!!
This ending though. Still blows my mind!

PS: I somehow came to ship it??! What is happening to me? Can I just ship all 3 of them together?

Byss and blood, what an ending!
The awesome and funny writing style from the first book continues in this one.
I absolutely loved Mr. Kindly and Eclipse together! Also all the new secondary characters.
The story itself was also really cool, though a bit confusing in book 1, it all started to make sense in the book 2.
BUT it kind of felt like a total different story that was not really connected to the first book. I had so many questions after the first book and it seems that only more were added and none were answered. I‘m really looking forward to book three and my ASWERS!

PS: wtf is this love interest?! Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love diverse characters and including diversity in books, but...never FORGET! And maybe also not forgive so easily?!
But I love the character itself so even though I don’t get the love, I love that the character is back!

The story was still great, but it annoyed me to no end. I don't like Ashlinn, Mia is too confused, no one is ever truly dead, except all the darkin's other than Mia

So it looks like I’m definitely in the minority on this one, but I just didn’t think this was as good as [b:Nevernight|26114463|Nevernight (The Nevernight Chronicle, #1)|Jay Kristoff|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1500688832s/26114463.jpg|42805826]. It’s still good, still really well written, but for me it was not as compelling. Which is a bummer because I was super excited for this and practically did a little dance when I brought it home from the library.

Maybe my expectations were too high? I dunno. I spent about 300 pages kinda bored, which is pretty astounding considering how bloody this book was. But honestly, whenever I put it down I didn’t feel compelled to pick it back up (until the end, anyway, because FINALLY I WAS ALMOST DONE). The gladiatii fights were just not super exciting, and I was NOT a fan of
Spoilerthe rather underhanded tactics Mia employed to ensure victory in the arena.
I also was not a fan of the romance.
SpoilerI just don’t care about Ashlinn and I wasn’t feeling her romance with Mia. I’m not against f/f relationships, but I just wasn’t a fan of how it was developed. It felt a little sudden, especially considering how Ashlinn MURDERED TRIC. I don’t really see how Mia could forgive her for that so easily.

I think I was here more for finding out clues about the darkin and what Mia is, and less about the super murder-y revenge-y parts. But the ending is pretty solid and there was one bit in there I was not really expecting, and I’m interested to see how it plays out in the next book.
SpoilerI’m mostly talking about “Tric” (if that’s who/what he really is) but also about Mia’s (supposed) parentage and Jonnen being darkin. Based on what happened to Furian, I’m thinking he’s going to end up dead in book 3.

This isn’t a bad book at all though. I did genuinely enjoy parts of it, and Kristoff certainly knows how to keep the twists coming. But I’m hoping book three is more like [b:Nevernight|26114463|Nevernight (The Nevernight Chronicle, #1)|Jay Kristoff|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1500688832s/26114463.jpg|42805826] and less like this.
