In this second novella we go back to 1901. We get a bit more insight into the lives of some of the children from the beloved TID characters. We come across James and Lucie Herondale, the Lightwood children and the Fairchild children among others.

A secret too long kept can kill a soul by inches. I watched a secret almost destroy a man once, the finest man ever made. Such a secret is like keeping treasure in a tomb. Little by little, poison eats away at the gold. By the time the door is opened, there may be nothing left but dust.

Aside from Brother Zachariah's pov, we also get to read from Matthew Fairchild's pov and I have to be honest here: At first, when looking forward to reading the Last Hours I was mostly always looking forward to reading about James Herondale and the TID characters in particular instead of a character like Matthew. But Matthew's POV was quite refreshing and interesting I have to say and I am really curious about what's to happen to him. I wasn't expecting to enjoy reading about him so much, but I should've expected nothing less though. Clare always writes characters I come to love, main and minor ones and in this novella, she has me hooked on so many of the Last Hours character set already.

“This is why we are chosen warrior partners, says Matthew, because we share such a perfect bond of sympathy. Come to me, Jamie, that we might share a manly embrace.”

So I think this novella was a great way of getting to know a bit more of the characters who we'll be reading about in the Last Hours trilogy, a great set-up to what's going to be an intense rollercoaster ride I believe. This novella was also a fantastic way of spending a bit more time reading about my beloved TID characters like Jem, Tessa and Will as well as Charlotte and Henry and bits and pieces of the other characters like Sophie and Gideon, who are being mentioned every now and then #AllTheFeels.

Where shall I carry it?
"Wherever you please. I thought I would walk with you a little way, my parabatai"
How far? asked Jem.
Will smiled. "Need you ask? I will go with you as far as I possibly may."

I can't handle these Will and Jem feels. Coming across Will, after having my fangirl heart being brutally murdered with that Clockwork Princess epilogue, is making me so happy and so intensely sad at the same time. I don't know wether the tears I shed - O, and I shed plenty alright - were of happiness of seeing Will again or of sadness. #AllTheFreakingFeels

I like seeing how the Shadow Market is some sort of thread throughout the stories so far - duh, it's called Ghosts of the Shadow Market for a reason, lol. But still... I just had to mention it haha. I always love reading more about not only the Nephilim and their way of living, but the Downworlders as well in this world, especially the Fair folk. They've become more present in the Dark Artifices books so far and I have a feeling Matthew is going to dive into the Downworlders world as well and I can't wait to read about it. And James already has my heart at this point - well, actually; he already had it when reading about him in prior novella's and knowing what the Last Hours was roughly going to be about. He's going to be such a tortured loved character, just like his father has been but in a whole other setting. I'm excited! And anxious. And excited, lol!

This was such a sad story. The one thing I didn’t really like on this story was the writing style.

“Cordelia”? “Kindred spirits”? Clare’s read Anne of Green Gables hasn’t she.

UPDATE: Okay so yea, I've read The Last Hours book now ([b:Chain of Gold|17699853|Chain of Gold (The Last Hours, #1)|Cassandra Clare|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1571379245l/17699853._SY75_.jpg|19212510] and [b:Chain of Iron|17699855|Chain of Iron (The Last Hours, #2)|Cassandra Clare|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1604591461l/17699855._SY75_.jpg|25129118]), and I'm realizing the comment about Cordelia might be better placed on one of those reviews. Alas, it was born here, and here it shall remain for the time being.
Also, I remember literally nothing from these Ghosts of the Shadow Market books. They were not particularly impactful, but at least I'll be able to read them again in the future and it'll all seem new to me I guess? (4 star review dropped to 3 stars for lack of impact.)
