Not a good mystery but an entertaining story. The characters were terrific and setting was brutal.

It is a lot of fun visiting with Mike Bowditch, especially when he is investigating in my neck of the woods or in places that I have been lately. There is always tidbits of history and ecology that make these books interesting. These characters are very much Mainers and this series in entertaining

Mike Bowditch (much like Harry Potter did through each of the continuous novels about him) grows up and learns and becomes more and more of a thinker, better and better at his job and his impetuousness, as the years pass. He's really grown on me, and these stories - both the complex plotting and the much-loved setting in the woods of Maine, make these mysteries one of the very best series I've ever read.,

Amber Langstrom knows what she wants, and her ability to manipulate men to get what she wants is legendary among those who know her. Her son has gone missing. He was a parolee from a prison for sex offenders. Amber insists that her 21-year-old son is no sex offender despite the statutory rape accusation lodged by an ex-girlfriend and sister to the boy’s friend, Josh. Amber is adamant that the sex was consensual.

Mike Bowditch is legendary, too, but for far different reasons from Amber. After five years as a game warden in Maine, He has settled into the job and leveled out a great deal. His powers of observation are excellent, and he’s well known for that. Sadly, he is also well known as Jack Bowditch’s son, and Jack was a lady’s man and a criminal of infamous proportions in the state. Mike labors mightily to get out from under his father’s dark shadow, but this book is the story of how that darkness impacted him yet again.

Amber knew that Mike was good at finding people and animals, and she approaches him early in the book to insist that he search for her son, missing for two weeks as the book starts. Naturally, Mike refuses … until Amber drops the bomb she knows will catch his attention and get him hooked on finding her son. She assures Mike that her boy is Mike’s half-brother.

Although he initially refuses to help, he ultimately goes to the Widowmaker ski resort to find the missing half-brother he never knew.

I had to work harder with this book than with the other books in the series to stretch and suspend disbelief. You think a guy is your brother because of his eyes? Really? Could there not be scores of men in Maine whose arresting eye color is similar to Mike’s and to that of his father?

That said, I enjoyed the subplot a great deal. It involves a highly intelligent wolf Mike captures from some tweakers who thought having a wolf for a pet would be cool.

Despite my difficulty with the plot, I enjoyed this installment in the series. I finished it in a single day. (You have to love medical appointments that stretch out far longer than they were ever supposed to).

never start reading a Mike Bowditch book if you don't have time to finish it. She says at 3am.

I need Natasha to interact with more women from the Red Room/Black Widow disciples. It's the best part of any story.
