Not as grandiose, violent, or intellectual as the other McCarthy books I’ve read, but it’s still struck me as the most readily enjoyable. I thoroughly enjoyed my time reading this and appreciated what to me felt like a sort of addendum to Blood Meridian.
Blood Meridian obviously covers a breadth of topics, but among them is the idea of disillusionment - particularly the rose tinted glasses society takes on when thinking about/reminiscing on the American west. John Grady Cole is this idea manifest in character.
There’s just so much to appreciate. The romance wasn’t all consuming in the novel and yet it played in the background so beautifully as to almost characterize the whole book. I loved Jimmy Blevins - both the boy and the radio pastor at the end - and think that his death is among peak McCarthy moments. It’s not as outright haunting as anything the Judge or Chigurh ever did to anybody, but I found it incredibly so in its simplicity and it’s a part of the book that’s stuck with me.
As always, McCarthy’s descriptions of landscapes were incredibly beautiful and stand among some of the better poetry I’ve read. I found in this book that descriptions of water were particularly stand out and always enjoyed those passages.

i don't think i'm a fan of mr. mccarthy's style of writing. i need some indication of who is speaking, but he chooses not to provide that. i think i might like the movie, sadly. i feel like i'm being lazy in saying that, but it is what it is.

I hate saying the word vibes, but this book is just that there’s not really a plot, but the imagery is really pretty. So if you wanna check out mentally and read imagery and have it kind of like lord of the rings of like no real trace of a plot, cool Enjoy it! I did. :)

Wow. A slow burn the whole time, but never do you feel bored with it. The way McCarthy paints the landscape is beautiful yet terrifying.
A story of love, of old ways, of internal struggle.
Phenomenal.
