This book was really fun, with the right amount of mostly fluff that has a touch of depth. I really liked Tessa and Max, and the setting made the book a thousand times better. 4.3 stars. I wish there was another one.

I really enjoyed this book starting off. The narrator has a hilarious, self-deprecating sense of humor that made even the steamiest sex scenes something I was cracking up over. It had all the makings of a great, light-hearted, chick lit summer read. However, as the book wore on, her lack of confidence in herself became irritating rather than something with which I could relate. It caused her to second guess anytime anyone else in the book was nice to her. The constant scenes with her repeating everything they said, and then insisting that they couldn't possibly mean what they were saying got old very quickly. She also had a tendency to ramble on and describe things in such a loquacious manner that I could not compare her to any actual human, no matter how long-winded, I have ever met in real life. By the last 1/3 of the book, I was reading just for the sake of finishing the book and wishing I could make it go by faster. The start of the book held enough promise that I would be willing to try this same author at least once more, but if this is a pattern in her writing and with her characters, I might have to move on.

DNF 10%
You know it’s bad when I only make it to 10%. I try to stick through books, try and give them a chance but I just could not with this one. It was awful. The main lead Tessa was beyond obnoxious for me. I get that she has body issues, I empathize with that. However have some self respect! She was so worried about being turned away for the part bc of her size (EVEN THOUGH THEY ALREADY KNEW HER SIZE) that she gets so drunk she throws up in front of everyone. And can she not go one freaking diary entry without lamenting her size. That brings me to the diary entries. I realize that’s the name of the book, I realize we would hear her perspective through the diary entries. What I did not realize was how obnoxious that would be.....Monday 10am in the parlor, Monday 10:19 am in the xxx room, Monday 10:40 in the stairwell. Holy crap lady are you seriously so anal that you have to Mark the time every single entry. 10% was enough for me to turn off the audio book and never look back.

The first time I thought “I’m not sure if this ones for me” was when the protagonist said she was a size 18. I closed the book, looked at the cover, and read it again. I understand that the cover is an illustration but there’s no way in hell that cover model is a size 18. It wouldn’t be such a big deal if said protagonist didn’t constantly put herself down about her weight. I ended up DNFing this one because, well it was just annoying.

It was predictable, but the main character was quite sassy. I did enjoy getting to see what it might be like for a modern person to live like a victorian.
