What a book!! I could relate to so many aspect of Dr Westover’d life. Her fight, internal and external, with her her beliefs that were cemented over years by her family is commendable. The hardest and frustrating battles of life are with those we love the most. You cannot live with them but you cannot leave them as well. I will fix it is always what you hope for. I feel her so much. Her narration of trying to fit in to her college life and later university life really hit close to home. Excellent beautiful memoir!!!

I don't know what to say about this book. I could talk about my own upbringing, my own family, my experiences with education and with religion. I could say what I believe about this book. I could say that I hoped parts of it were not true, and how much I fear they are.

"That books are not tricks, and that I was not feeble." (Chapter 28)

Not to be a total cliché, but read this book for yourself, and bring your own experiences with you. Reacting to it is part of its worth.

Side note; I read this as an audiobook, and I found it to be one of the better non-fiction/memoir audiobooks I've listened to. (If there are multiple versions, I read the one by Julia Whelan.)

La historia del crecimiento personal gracias a la educación. La lucha de una persona entre la educación familiar y la del mundo exterior. La superación de obstáculos, el peso de la familia y el impacto de los progenitores en un niño para el resto de su vida.

This is my latest book group book and I hadn't known anything about it before I began...just astonishing!  It's not an easy read in that it is laden with abuse, trauma, illness, maniulation, neglect.  And yet, I just couldn't stop reading it, willing Tara to make it out, make it through, and survive.  I've seen some reviews questioning how much can possibly be true - there were some parts towards the end of the story where I did wonder 'really?' but even with the possibility of a child's memories being not quite right it is a remarkable story, and a fascinating read.
