It could just be because this was a novelization for kids, but the story seemed to lack depth. There were a few cool things about it, and I'm sure it's going to be a very pretty movie, based on the descriptions and the pictures, but it's pretty shallow. Particularly the...*ahem* "strong" female character. She...helps a man with his problems. Basically. I don't know, it just didn't ring any bells with me. I'm sure lots of people will like the movie, but there's no way it's reaching Frozen levels, is all I'm saying.

I like the story of Moana, but I wasn’t a fan of this novelization. The story stayed mostly true to the movie, but it was perfunctory and lacked heart. There were lush descriptions for setting details but sparse descriptions for character motivations. Considering that this was a junior novelization, the vocabulary was often advanced. I found it odd to have an illustrated children’s book typeset in large, 14 point letters, using words like “maneuvered” and “bioluminescent”. My daughter had a very hard time reading this book to me. I believe she enjoyed it more than I did, which is why I give it an extra star. After all, I’m not the novels target demographic.

I know this is a children’s book. However, it was a really good easy read. I love tropical beach stories which is one reason why I loved this book!! I also love Disney!! So this was an awesome book!!!
