I really enjoyed this book, it's witty quick and I was transported to the world and village of Geeta. I thoroughly enjoyed it and would love to read more about these women. I wish it was a film too, as it would be so good to see some of the hilarious scenes played out. There's a lot of violence towards women in this book which at times is hard but the contrast with the humour is deftly done.

I was wondering what makes a five star read for me. I've read some good books this year but not given our any 5-stars yet, even though I've read some things I can't really fault and massively enjoyed. I was thinking, what really is a 5-star book for me, then? Maybe I'll never rate a book 5/5. I've also been reading a lot of audiobooks and I was wondering if that's having an impact on how much I enjoy books, that maybe I'll never LOVE a fiction audiobook.

THEN THIS BOOK CAME ALONG.

TEN OUT OF TEN FIVE STARS NO NOTES. SOMEONE MAKE THIS GORGEOUS, HILARIOUS, HEARTBREAKING, BEAUTIFUL BOOK INTO A FILM RIGHT NOW!!!!!

This just blew me away. It's GENUINELY funny, not the kind of smile-to-yourself amusing that I usually mean when I call a book funny. It's so warm and tender, especially on female friendship, whilst also touching on some really big, difficult, dark issues like racism, caste, domestic abuse and rape. I felt like I learned a lot about India (or at least, a certain part of India) and had a rollicking good time while I was at it. I can't recommend this book highly enough.

While dark, its surprisingly funny. A real comedy of errors. And the bonds of the women feel very real and touching.

kind of a really masterful book! i was VERY hesitant about what the tone of this book would be before i picked it up.  And while it does have that cozy mystery vibe, it doesn't shy away from a setting that I think a lot of readers in the western world would consider severe poverty, and a lot of things that are a lot darker than what the average cozy mystery is dealing with.  I don't think I've *ever* read a book like this.  It's SO fun to read, and Geeta and her social network are so engaging. While there is a good amount of straight up violence in this book, it stays pretty punchy without taking away the seriousness of what's taken place (for the most part
i do think the final sequence where the Dalit character is the most brutalized and then also suddenly is fully capable of stunts is a little too crazy
).
All in all, though, I really enjoyed this book.  Frankly a little upset this is her debut novel, because I want more to read!
