The Bandit Queens tells the story of Geeta, a spurned Indian housewife who is feared by the locals of the village for being abandoned by her husband. Everyone thinks she killed him. But Geeta is just trying to survive, and when a member of her loan group comes calling for aid, Geeta finds herself embroiled in hijynx she could never have forseen.
This novel was such a downwards spiral comedy that I found myself reading with incredulity yet laughing out loud at various points. Sometimes the sheer absurdity of certain situations pulled me out of the story but the female characters were all so lovable in their own ways that I was always pulled back in. I found Geeta to be quite relatable in the way she understood social interactions but I could easily understand if she may be annoying to some. Her naivity when it came to seeing the best in people is mind-boggling when she has only ever been disappointed by those around her. But that hopefulness to find other bonobos was incredibly endearing and made me laugh every time she exclaimed about them. Overall the plot of the story felt like a black comedy of errors about feminism, patriarchy, friendship and society. It was dealing with heavy subjects yet was done with a sense of lighthearted humour. I found all the Indian references very interesting and I really want to read more about Phoolan Devi now. I would recommend this book to the right person.

What a wonderful read!
It definitely is one of my favorite books.
Reading it you can always feel on edge, not knowing what will happen. You never are sure if the characters are safe or what will happen to them. It’s masterfully crafted so that you never know if everything is going towards a happy ending or doom.
I loved pausing my read to learn about different aspects of India and its culture. Because of that it took me much longer to read than anticipated but I feel inspired to research more on my own.

I absolutely loved this book and would recommend it to anyone in a heartbeat, I just think the author writes so well and conveys emotion and its complexity so well.
