I found the beginning of the book slow to build. Harpers character was pretty much set up immediately but Rhen took too long to be determined in my opinion. It read almost as if we ourselves were Harper trying to determine if we trust him even tho they both narrated their own chapters. Once I got past about 2/3 of the book it picked up and I read literally 50% of the book in one night. I’m super excited to continue the series because I’m invested in Grey 1000000%

This has got to be one of the best Beauty and the Beast retellings I've read. Can't wait for the next book.

Haven’t had this much fun reading a book in a long time.

Fun as hell.

I felt pretty neutral for the majority of this book, but the last 20% really hooked me. I wasn’t sure if I was going to continue with this series but now I have to to see what happens. Also, Rhen is fine enough, but I really love Grey and I think I want Harper to be with him

LOVELY!!! ☺️

The male characters were RESPECTFUL, and swoon worthy. The female leads were strong, and independent.
The plot was beautiful and the story kept me on my toes.

4.5/5!!

There were some spots early on that dragged and when I almost put it down. But once Rhen opened up a bit (making him more accessible as a character) and the action picked up, I couldn’t put it down. I fell for Grey and Harper as characters immediately - complicated and rough-edged but ultimately deeply caring. Rhen took longer, but once he started to focus on saving his people and less on his own problems, he grew on me.

15+ trauma, abuse, violence, gangs (I guess that's what Lawrence is?) cancer patient/death, lots of death and gore.

Okay, so I just discovered Brigid Kemmerer a few weeks ago and I now realize that her writing is so easy and lovable. The defy the night series, and now this series... I'm hoping books 2-3 are just as good. Keep them coming Miss Kemmerer. I need more characters to fall in love with. Not really... but, I assure you, I will make room.
