In my journey to read all of Toni Morrison’s books in publication order, this has been my favorite to read so far. Oddly, it’s the one that I’ve enjoyed the language itself the least, but the plot felt tighter-knit. I think this book had a lot to say about who you’re in community with and how that affects your actions, and it was compelling to see Milkman finding his people after a life of relative isolation. And the way that isolation was woven into the story from the very beginning goes a long way to show how we can bring it upon ourselves.

If I'm being 100% honest, I don't know if I'm smart enough to appreciate Morrison's beautiful writing. Perhaps it was the format (audio) I read this on, but I struggled to keep up with this story and cast of characters.
I will be rereading in the near future to provide a clearer review, and probably change formats for a different perspective.

this is my second time reading this book. the first time i read it i was in high school, and it completely changed my taste in literature as well as my outlook on life. revisiting it, i loved it even more. this novel speaks with all the appropriate nuance about what it means to decolonize one’s heritage and legacy. milkman is a heinous character, but through him the story of how women love is so eloquently told. i relate to lena a lot, as an oldest daughter with a middle sister and baby brother. i truly think anyone who has had to dive into their family’s history in order to heal will relate and love this novel.

5 stars implies that I recommend it, and I really don’t. If you aren’t gonna tough it out, then it isn’t worth your time, but if you make it to the end, it’s truly life changing. I am better for having read this book.

I enjoyed it a lot more in the later chapters, when I stopped taking notes. As with most books, I think I would have liked it more if I read it outside of class. Very well done!

I can confidently say: I was touched. I don't know if I was moved, but in another life I'm sure there's a version of me, either in another universe or that lives hidden in the back of my own mind now, who would have weeped. Maybe I was moved. I get it. I think I know what that feels like.
