seeing other people has such a slow lead in—the kind of bricklaying that i think loses many readers early on and would’ve certainly lost me, had the writing not been so crisp and self-aware. diana reid can write and she knows it.
i was taken with the relationship dynamics and character work more so than the actual story, which speaks to reid’s brilliance because im really not the type to read about shit that annoys me. my (wo)man is your (wo)man is our (wo)man???? get out of my face lmao. i bounced between 3/4 stars (i usually save 4 stars for books that i know ill read again and as good as this is, it’s definitely a one and done bc these people are the definition of #aLOT) but the lack of handwringing paired with the allowances made for the reality of human selfishness? a big yes from me. super convincing; i completely bought into this world and these characters and couldn’t wait to find out how it all unraveled. i did think the bland sameness of all the characters stretched credulity in the beginning, but the more i read, the more apparent it was that these characters, despite their claims otherwise, really aren’t the type to branch out at all, so even that worked.

I read a review saying that this felt like an Australian Sally Rooney book and I will agree - although less seeped in politics. The characters are young and not always likable. They make bad decisions and are generally pretty selfish and self righteous.
The story is messy. Relationships are complicated. We follow a sisters Eleanor and Charlie over the summer of Dec 2021 to January 2022. After 2 years of lockdowns and pandemic the arts have begun to revive. There is a juxtaposition of the bohemian artist sister, Charlie and the straight-laced, 'good girl' sister Eleanor. It's an interesting look at sibling dynamics.
Personally the themes of Love & Virtue were more engaging. But this one is still definitely worth the read.
