This is my second Kate Alice Marshall book and I'll read anything she writes. She makes stunning work of atmosphere and tension. I devoured this book in like 4 hours, bone-tired from a long workday, but I just couldn't put it down

3.5 stars. Huh. Not sure how to feel about this one. Graphic deaths of Jess's dad, and 3 of the bad guys. Pretty graphic for 7th graders, in my opinion. SLJ says 9th & up, Booklist says 8th & up. The audiobook is well done, but I'm not sure that I'll include this in our book talks. Or maybe for 8th grade & up? I agree with the Hatchet comparison, but it is a relatively slow moving plot with brief moments of intensity toward the end.

Great survival story, told in 1st person POV, loved the main character, very realistic.

This was a thoroughly enjoyable read, actually. Not mind blowing (thus four stars), but I really rather liked it. Like a 21st century YA into the wild. Recommend.
