Oh the poor Baudelaire children! Such unfortunate lives set out in this ‘bad beginning’ - you really do feel sorry for them. However, its thoroughly entertaining to follow their misfortune in the style that Lemony Snicket writes. I read this as a child and am now returning to the series as an adult. I really enjoyed the first book and it reminded me of why I loved it so much when I was younger. I love Lemony Snicket’s writing and his dark humour is fantastic. I had forgotten that throughout the book he talks to the reader and even cleverly explains some of the more challenging vocabulary which I think is brilliant for children. He has such a clear voice and I can’t wait to move onto number 2.
Minor: Child death, Death of parent, Violence, Physical abuse, and Adult/minor relationship
