Reread on 7/15/22:
Bumped up from 2 to 4 stars.
Another example of "2020 was the absolute worst and took my anger out on this series" because this volume was really good. I actually liked the chapter were Kotoko solves a mystery for the mystery club as well as the set up for the Sleeping Murder case.
I don't have much else to add, but I do want to address Rikka's "He was mine" comment. Upon reread, I don't necessarily think that Rikka was implying that Kuro was hers from a romantic sense. While I wouldn't be surprised that Rikka was referring to romance (as the couple inferred), I think she was also talking about how Kuro is now content with living out his life naturally rather than trying to find a way to die like Rikka does. I don't think I can explain it too well, but the impression that I got was that while Kuro was with Saki, Kuro was also still attached to Rikka because Saki looked like her, thus Rikka still had a firm grip on his life and the direction he wanted to take it. Since he's been with Kotoko, Kuro isn't as attached to Rikka and Kotoko's viewpoint on mortality and death are completely different than Rikka's, not to mention that Kotoko is far more accepting of Kuro's condition that most (if all) other women would be. So, to me, this line and Rikka's previous denouncement of their relationship reads more of, "I don't like his girlfriend because she's encouraging him to accept his life" than "I don't like his girlfriend because I want him to be with me". Again, she could still have romantic feelings for him, but I think her statement means more than that.
Rant aside, this was a really solid volume that I enjoyed more on reread. Still good stuff to behold.

Okay Rikka, really? You went from "I want to be able to live and die like a normal human" to "some girl I don't like is dating my cousin and I don't like it cuz he's MINE". Pushing aside the troubling incest implications, why are we taking a cunning, manipulative, and crafty female character and making her into a catty rejected woman? Seriously, WHY was that necessary???
I will say, I did like the flashback scene between Kotoko and Rikka as well as Kotoko's seaweed comment, but that was pretty much it. Hopefully this "murder mystery" plot doesn't disappoint...

Intricate supernatural mystery plot lines with interjections of comedy, great illustrations with clean lines and well done screen tones—quality wise this is great book and great series. It's just not the right genre for me, to much of a horror tonality.

I’m liking the plot arc that the second half of the book set up—but the first half of the book felt like filler…especially the entire chapter with the mystery club member that could have been edited to just a couple pages.
