Mankind has discovered a powerful machine built by an ancient alien civilization. While we don’t understand what it is or how how it works, you better believe we’re gonna poke it to see what it does.

Action packed and tense, but still the authors are able to break large world changing problems down to the human level. What I truly loved about this book was it’s central theme of redemption, and what it truly might look like to forgive the unforgivable. While a bit boring when first introduced Pastor Anna’s character really shines at the end of this novel. I ended up highlighting entire paragraphs of her dialogue.

Book 3 of the Expanse once again has a host of new characters as humankind goes out to explore The Ring.  Anna was my favorite due to her optimistic viewpoint--and Tilly, of course, was fun as well.  In Melba, we also had (gasp!) a woman who was not hit on at any point...but don't worry, y'all, because she
Spoiler was a would-be mass murderer,
so who would want that, amirite?

Though the book flirted with exploring the crew of the Rocinante's pasts, the most we got was a bit of confirmation about Amos that had been foreshadowed in book 2.  Despite Holden's intimate relationship with Naomi, he...still does not know anything about her past?  Kind of strange, especially given that they all know his--you'd think he would be the type of person to at least bring it up.

However, Abaddon's Gate goes harder on power struggles than emotional arcs, though Melba does have a bit of one.  I was a bit disappointed we didn't get any resolution with
Spoilerher and Anna, as I thought they were going to have at least one more significant scene together when Anna saw her in the elevator at the end
.  There's also, of course, more to learn about the beings behind the protomolecule as well as the introduction of a Big Bad I assume we will be seeing more in the future.

Recommend? Yep, another fun, quick read!  Mind the content warnings.
