An absorbing mystery with mainly well-developed character (with the exception of a two-dimensional sociopath). The 90s setting was effective and well-integrated without being obnoxious.

The complex web of plots and unreliable narration was ambitious. Not all of it quite landed by the final pages; some of the plots got a bit of a short thrift, but it was fun to go back and find the clues that the author had strewn throughout the text.

Diversity was a bit of an issue in this book. While there are a lot of different ages, it's a very white book, and the author didn't seem to know what to do with the fat character she included.

This is a lovely book, much much more than a mystery novel. I'm tempted to call it a coming of age tale, but that's not right either. Perhaps it's best described as a coming into one's own tale, as there's so many characters of various ages within it who grow and change and become better versions of themselves. There's a lot of touching moments and plenty of mystery and twists. A fair amount of 90's nostalgia thrown in. Super fitting for anyone who loves music.
