Powerful, Amazing, Heartbreaking

What a powerful novel. Please read this. I did not know any of this history. Such a devastating journey for this family. I loved the ending.

5+ This book was outstanding. The intertwined stories were captivating from the beginning to the end. The narration was also perfection.

This was a heavy book. It was good and I feel like I learned so much, but it was heavy. It took me a while to read because of this, but the last few chapters were a perfect knitting together of everything that had come before it. Most importantly, this book really speaks to the world as it is today.

Why bother with writing this review when my feelings can be summed up in: READ IT.

Thank you to netgalley and Viking for sending me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I'm a white woman so whilst I endeavour to explain things as best as I can let me know if I've said something offensive and I'll correct it ASAP.

Homegoing follows the generations of 2 sisters (who didn't know each other existed), Effia who is sold into slavery and Esi who is a slave trader's wife. It alternates POVs from each side of the family though each generation until the modern day.

This book just really affected me. I just sat for like half an hour afterwards just not sure what to do with myself. I still just sit and think about it and I read it in December.

Hard to read but hard to put down. Unbelievably ambitious but really well executed.

wow....this was a deep book that took you through every possible emotional extreme...beauty and terrible ugliness, the horror of rape and the joy of love, anger and hope and I could keep going. The book starts with two half sisters in what is present day Ghana, who never met, and goes through 8 generations of their descendants told in alternating chapters. I think I learned more real African American history from this book than all the history classes I've taken. At times not an easy to read book (rape, slavery, cruelty, language, drugs, etc) but truly a great book that is very well written, would highly recommend.
