I thought this would be a five star reading judging from the strength of the beginning but it really fizzled out to a non-ending unfortunately, and I don't refer to the main ending, but to the fact that too few characters got to a certain, clear point. Perhaps this was the point, but it made me drop a star from my final rating.
This book is both too short and too long. Too long for something that is not a story and too short for something that is a depiction of a horrendously flawed and messed up system. I wanted more, much more, and instead I got a very short version of "Orange is the New Black" but with fewer people I loved.
The main character I found to be dull, uninteresting, stupid and sort of misplaced, to be honest. I enjoyed almost all the other characters far more, except, of course, for Gordon Hauser who was either an intentional red herring or proof of bad writing.
Overall this book is well-written and insightful but it is insufficient. I wanted more but I do feel that this author can provide more so I will definitely read her again.

I don’t know how to describe this book except for that it made me very uncomfortable from start to finish. Not uncomfortable in a way that I should sit with. Just purely uncomfortable.

This was a fantastic book, about the life of a woman serving life in a California prison, but largely focusing on her life in San Francisco, and the lives of others dealing with similar working class poverty. It was compelling and had a host of interesting voices, and was really rooted in a sense of San Francisco.
There was something unfocused about the different narrative threads and when the spotlight slipped from Romy it felt less urgent. The passages seemingly extracted from the diaries of the unabomber were particularly confusing and failed to coalesce for me.
I am particularly keen to read more of Kushner's work after this. I listened to this on audiobook which she narrates herself and really enjoyed it. She has a kind of monotonous, weary voice that felt apt for the character of Romy. I love when authors read their own books.
