Absolutely loved this book! It had everything for me, from real world issues to smut. Often authors don't know how to write children but Williams did a fantastic job with pre-teen and teenagers perspectives. The character growth felt real and true. Loved all the imagery and descriptions.

This was a beautiful romance book, because it covered so much and made its characters so full and developed. I wanted to branch out and read more romance about non-white leads, and this was so beautiful and had me smiling many times. I think there was even more depth that could have been explored, but it was wonderful overall.

After years of hearing about this book, I imagined it to be a slow, sad, brooding romance. It is definitely some of those things (check the content warnings!), but the tone is also light and readable, which came as a surprise. I honestly felt like it maybe could have gone deeper and taken a bit more time? Like the content was definitely heavy, but the way it was addressed wasn't super lived-in. I really really liked the ending and the overall themes of self-discovery and not having to be perfect to be loved.

I don't know that there's any one thing that makes a book "good", but I do know that I didn't enjoy myself while reading this, and I have no idea why its readers are so insistent about others knowing this story. Shane and Eva's love scared me in maybe a really good way, but coupled with all the pain and trauma it grew in? This was tough. Emotionally I was exhausted on page 65, but I didn't know the content warnings beforehand so that could be part of it.  There are a lot of good parts of this book (Audre's entire character, Eva's honesty with herself about her relationship with her mother) that give me glimpses of why it's so popular, but I just won't condone the abundance of triggering content for the sake of the narrative. The arc of Ty's character was not okay. So let's just say that with the dark twists and romanticizing of self harm, it was a long seven days reading this.

The syntax was gorgeous, though. I felt everything.

They spend a week together as teens and then become authors and write to/about each other ever since. The premise is darling. The book didn’t quite deliver on being darling. It was still a really good book. Challenging, sometimes dark, very realistic characters. Read it! But not if you’re looking for something charming.

Absolutely love this author. The timeline and narrator jumping never felt confusing at ALL. It just made the story more vibrant and detailed.

LOVE! So much to love and joy in this book but also tragic and emotional. Great representation, the range of sub-plots and world building while not being unnecessary and staying true to the characters- really impressive!! Definitely read!

This book was so refreshing to read after a long book slump. The characters were so vivid and real. I absolutely loved the banter and back and forth they had throughout the book - especially when with Eva’s daughter roped in. Their story of their childhood together was heartbreaking in so many ways, but so real. The author really made you feel for these characters and what they had gone through to get to who they were now.
I was devastated at the moment with Shane’s student near the end 😭.
It made you so invested in them at the end and wanting their growth to find a way to be together.
Overall, this was a heartfelt and beautiful read. Lots of moments of fun and wittiness with the perfect wrapped up ending.

Also bonus points to the author for actually writing a realistic and not annoying miscommunication troupe. Bravo - it should be studied by authors everywhere.
