This was super good. It takes a few chapters to get a grip as to what is actually going on but after that you have to keep reading to see what happens!

This book and The Outlander are so full of vivid descriptions and characterization you almost leave the real world to go back in time with these characters. Again, the plot doesn’t feel like the main thing in this book. It’s almost like a celebration of nature. You’re reading long paragraphs describing emotions and setting and then suddenly it’s dropped in so casually … oh and the nun killed Mary. Man that nun was nuts. I think I liked this book more than The Outlander, but they were both special in their own ways. They both have an overarching sense of dread and anticipation.

This book was captivating from beginning to end. It's been several years since I read The Outlander, the tale of fugitive Mary Boulton and her life on the Canadian frontier and it has really stayed with me. This book continues the story of her son, Jack, and her partner, who also become fugitives, in their own ways. It's wonderful to read such a gripping novel, which takes place in a very familiar location, the early villages of Banff and Lake Louise, as well as the area in between these towns.
