I sat down to read about 10 pages of this book just before tea time. I had a friend round I was supposed to be cooking for. Luckily, she was hooked on her book too because once I started I read all of this in one sitting, according to my friend I barely moved.
It's like I opened this book and was in a trance until I was finished. I felt like it was about ten minutes but it was actually an hour and a half as I read and reread passages of this incredible poetry. We ate late 🤣
The cover of this book is actual perfection and your first warning - I think I was biting my thumb for 80% of the time I was reading this.
As someone who has panic attacks, this book took me to a very intense place. The poems flow on from one another, pulling you deeper and deeper and in smaller circles as it went. I literally couldn't look away. The collection as a whole so perfectly encapsulates what it means to live in a state of anxiety which uses panic attacks as a pressure valve. All the senses are there, crowding in on you. The rushing onslaught of thoughts just keeps. on. coming. It doesn't let up, it holds you there, struggling - very much like your brain when it veers towards anxiety more often than it was designed to.
I want to hand this book to the people who struggle to understand panic/anxiety disorders. Reading this so perfectly and overwhelmingly represents those feelings and experiences that I think it would help you understand if it isn't something you experience. I was sat unconsciously going through my coping mechanisms for an oncoming panic attack - the poetry just pulls you in to such a primal state it moves your emotions along with it.
Excellent, honestly. I would read anything by this author, I'll be reading this again ans handing it out to friends.
