Love the realistic teenage snark in this main character. I'm also a big fan of the evolving lore of this supernatural thrill ride. The plot reveals are well foreshadowed without making it too overt. There is a bit of suspended disbelief that needs to go into accepting that in a group that acknowledges the Withered exists our 17 y/o protagonist is the only one who can profile them. But it's well done enough I'm willing to believe it for as long as the narrative remains compelling. And it was.
Graphic: Death, Mental illness, Violence, and Murder
Moderate: Gore, Grief, and Death of parent
Minor: Domestic abuse and Fire/Fire injury

Finally, the FBI show up, and the MC has Joined them . The book starts with a slight time-skip, but it's ok. I read 3.5 before this one, and I think that you should actually do the opposite. The reason for this is that because I read 3.5 I Knew that a specific 'serial killer' was a nice guy. .
It would be interesting to read the two at the same time, like, switch to 3.5 afterthe withered is dead or captured .
This book is back to being mostly plot-driven asJohn doesn't have a girlfriend anymore .
I liked the new characters introduced in the book, but I'm also quite satisfied withthem all dying
