I loved this book. It was hard for a bit—as I was raging over Altha’s “trial.” But eventually, I let the time periods dull my feelings. I think it could be (and is) argued that this book treats women poorly for no point. But I disagree. The fact is: women ARE treated poorly. They always have been. And often without a voice to protest. But women are strong and resilient and that’s the mark of this book.

These women were all seen going THROUGH IT. At the worst moment of their lives. But they fought back. They may not have been remarkably heroic. But they were brave and compassionate and wondrous for each time period. Altha was calm, brave, protective. She knew when to fight back. She was careful. And she never *let* them tell her how to live. Violet was curious and feisty. She sought the truth and craved an education—stealing it when it wasn’t available to her. And Kate was growing, gaining strength, love, and confidence (etc).
SpoilerI’m not one for kids or even motherhood but her pregnancy was what allowed her to heal from her abuse.

I thought the entire story was beautiful. Despite my arachnophobia, I was thrilled by the natural connections. It was a folksy dream. The perfect level of mystical and magical without being overly magic. It straddled the line well. Powerful—about how women help and protect one another.

I didn’t get connected to the book till part 2. Even thought the men kinda got what they deserved… they deserved even more.
The writing was beautiful but I think the problem was me, a mood reader.

If you liked The Lost Apothecary, I imagine you will like this.

If, like me, you thought The Lost Apothecary was a giant waste of your time, I imagine you will dislike this.

If, like me, you are sick of authors using Big Bad Men as the only way to set up a compelling journey of empowerment for women, then skip this.

If, like me, you are sick of authors saying things like "he wanted to fill me with his seed so he could control me", skip this.

I had such high hopes for Weyward, I really did. And within 45 pages I realized this was going to be a major disappointment.

Wow, I am so pleased I checked this book out of the library as these fictional women have shifted something inside me. Hart has used incredible historical world building and magical realism to reconstruct what we know about the world into a believable and harrowing fairy tale. I live in Lancaster for university and this story has added an extra layer of magic to my surroundings. The character development was highly emotional, causing me to have visceral reactions (gasping, forgetting the real world, forgetting to breathe!) This story follows three women through their Cinderella Story from abuse and fear to freedom and power, with heart warming and confident feminist messages throughout.
One of the most beautifully constructed stories I have read, but the distressing content meant I almost DNF out of pure discomfort when reading. I wish I had started this venture with more knowledge of the traumatic themes. Before you read, check the content warnings!
