I really enjoyed it. It was very clear, simply written book. The pace was quick without being hurried and kept the tone of the authors age (both at the time it occurred as well as at the time of telling) very nicely.
There were several instances where his stark observances were very moving. The one I remember most clearly is "...without school, life is like ashes." Of course, I can easily substitute 'books' or 'education' for school. Sometimes I forget how lucky I am to have information of all kinds at my fingertips all the time. Things like this make me deeply grateful.
Although completely dissimilar in presentation, in tone and purpose, it reminds me a of Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood by Marjane Satrapi (also a great read).
I'm going to try and get my teenage nephews to read it. The candid viewpoint of a boy from a different background would be good for them. Maybe they'll even be interested since it's true =]

This book has really long chapters. Each chapter descibes what happened in one country. This book is one of my favourite books ever. My new Favourite book.

Assolutamente da leggere. Vero, semplice, uno schiaffo che ci fa aprire gli occhi su una realtà lontana da noi che, se non tramite le parole di chi certe cose le ha vissute davvero, non potremmo capire.
