This book is much harder to read than the first, simply because it is very slow moving. For me, it was too easy to put down and not pick back up.

Altogether, the story is good and it was fairly enjoyable. I was looking forward to it being another fairytale retelling, instead it was just an extension of the first book. I think there are a lot of ways that something like that could have added to the story.

I have decided that the reason I wasn’t able to enjoy this book as much as the first in the series is because of the less-than-up-to-par middle. The beginning and ending parts of the book were really fun and enjoyable, I found myself laughing and smiling over a lot of things, but the middle just ended up boring me (even with listening to the audiobook at 1.8x or 2.0x speed). It definitely wasn’t an unenjoyable book, but it just wasn’t up to the level of The Goose Girl.

I also felt like the darkness of this book did end up hindering my enjoyment of it as well. I’m not a fan of things along the same line as what Enna’s internal struggle in this book was, so it did take away from an otherwise pretty good experience for me. It wasn’t really all That dark, but it was darker than what I was expecting for a book in the vein that this came from, so it bothered me.

Beyond these, though, this was a fun book. Don’t know that I would’ve ever gotten around to picking it up if it hadn’t been for the free audiobook of it on Audible.

(sidenote: the ending had me melting, how adorable were Garrick and Finn !!)

Hmm, not as good as The Goose Girl. The characters all read childish, even Isi who is married, has royal duties, and is trying to become a mother. The ending is rushed and I don't feel that Enna's story came full circle. She does horrible things that take a toll on her, but maybe she is written too shallow for it to even matter for this story? It's hard to tell what the point is. I still love the friendship and magic that this world offers, I just wish the characters would have grown since the last book.

This book was a little disappointing to me. This was the first Shannon Hale book that I haven't loved, but it could be because I listened to the book on tape, and the readers were a little annoying. The book meandered a lot, and seemed to be struggling to establish a clear purpose. Definitely not as good as Goose Girl, and probably not good enough to convince me to try the rest of the series in the near future.
