I never know just how to discuss memoirs on here. All I will say is that this was masterfully written and poignant.

Maya Angelou is great, but the best thing about this book is that the audiobook is read by her. I love when she's sharing stories that she learned from, and the coffee story and the rug story will definitely stick with me, but her preachy advice (e.g. all the stuff about patriotism) is not my thing and I often disagreed with her. It's a disjointed collection, and in particular her short essay on rape feels like her just taking the opportunity to throw a take out there without having done research or thought it through. Take what resonates and leave the rest!

maya angelou really is one of the greatest women ever !!! all the prose and the self-awareness reflected in her writing, she was always ahead of the curve. would've been 5/5 but i don't really care about America or religion

  • I liked some parts. It just didn't lived up to my expectations. I expected something more. There were a few things I didn't agree with or experiences I would've have thought differently.
  • Found some inspiring beautiful quotes though.
  • I loved her thoughts on courage as the most important virtue.
  • It felt patronizing at times

i enjoyed parts of this book, and some parts i did not. i liked the insight and advice of someone older, but you can definitely tell that the book has aged since published in 2008.
