Once I got to page 400 (out of 852), it really started to pick up. Worth a read, but you are probably going to have to force yourself to read especially at the beginning.

relaxing

It's honestly weird how soothing this book is, because the actual content is not relaxing at all. But McMurty is a master of vibes and every time you pick up this book it feels like sinking into the couch and putting on a blanket. Which is ironic because life is anything but comfortable in these days of the old west. This is a book that you are grateful is very long because you just enjoy the journey so much, I didn't even particularly care too much about the plot I just enjoyed the vibes so much. It was disappointing when I finally got to the end, especially as the end wasn't very satisfying from a plot tying up perspective, but happy to see that there are sequels so I can delve again into this world.

Things I liked:
- the description of the west, the illustration of the geography and the ecology
- Augustus McCrae, most of the time
- the payoff of all the stories intersecting
- Clara and her whole setup in Nebraska
- the rivers

Things I did not like:
- 960 pages of coarse masculinity with little to no growth
- my own stubbornness to finish this book
