This book is generally fine. It’s engaging enough to be a light read, but I don’t find myself itching to pick up the next one.
Mare is interesting as a character, and I hope that the next books delves deeper into what her powers truly are and their origins. Cal seems somewhat flat as a character to me. All I got was “loyal military son” from him. Maven was more interesting and the twist at the end was well done and adds intrigue to his character. The supporting cast was mostly forgettable. I found myself having to actively think about who someone was when a characters name was mentioned.
I will keep reading at least the next book in this series to see how it goes. The writing style felt a little slow, but it may have just been due to the need for exposition and world building. Hopefully it picks up more.

I.... did not love this as much as I wanted to. The concept is cool but the characterization of one of the antagonists felt inconsistent, in a way that left me really confused and taken out of the moment. Other than that, the rest of the book was okay — I really liked the world building; the dynamics between characters and their powers was intriguing. Unfortunately, I didn't really actually like any of the characters enough to care about what happened to them, which meant there were very little stakes for me. I'm not sure if I'll finish the series.
