The way Brussig begins a point, seemingly leaves it unresolved and then pulls everything together to great effect time and time again is wonderful.

What a brilliant little novel. Silly and profound at the same time and probably reflects the everyday attitude of most former East Germans better than the endless punditry: 'Happy people have bad memory but rich memories'.

Heartbreaking and hilarious. I would teach this novel because I think teens/adolescents will read something different from what adults read (and that’s, based on the novel’s last paragraph, entirely the point). I think Franzen’s introduction thinks about translation in a really cool and interesting way, which could really open up a discussion about what we make of novels from other places in time and spaces in the world (particularly ones like East Germany that no longer exist but of course always will exist).

“My God, we were funny. And we didn’t even know it.”
