I really liked Lauren Royal's Regency series, so I was excited to try this series.

It's an obvious first novel. It had some pacing issues and the characters were so-so.

I always like that Lauren Royal uses history in her romance novels really well. I knew very little about the Cromwell time period, so I learned something new. I am going to check out some of the other books in the series. I like the Chase family a lot, and I am hoping this series gets better.

Besides a few details here and there, this book was not historical romance, imho. The characters did not often speak like they were in the 17th century or act like it or live in circumstances befitting the times. And they were quite lackluster. The sister and brothers had more personality than the main couple did. Every aspect of the plot was predictable. Plenty of good sex scenes, though.

I'm a huge fan of Historical Romances such as Amethyst. While the ending is nearly always predictable, I enjoy taking the journey to 17th century England! What made this book even more enjoyable is the strength of Amethyst Goldsmith. Very refreshing not to have a "society" debutante as the main female character.

Ready to read "Emerald" next!
