A good start to spooky season.

This is very much the 'setting the stage' volume of the series (makes sense as Volume 1), so there's a slower pace and a lot of questions asked by the reader as secrets/world-building slowly unfolds.

Enjoyable but full of predictable tropes and elements.

Good, moody art too.

Wilma has moved back to her father’s home town and is starting a new school. She thinks this will go smoothly but then there’s a missing girl looking exactly like her, a glowing message in her locker that only she can see, and way too many people in school are trying to get to know her and tell her who to hang out with. Quickly Wilma is learning this town is a lot stranger than she thought and her role in it is so much more than she could have anticipated.

I liked the concept of this graphic novel and the art style was pretty fun but it left we wanting more with way too many questions unanswered. The overall style of the story gave me a bit of a Buffy the Vampire Slayer vibe which was fun and I was intrigued by the magical covens in the story. The direction the plot took had me invested in what was going to happen but then it fell really short with making the reader guess too much as to what was supposed to happen. With the way each issue started with the notes from the Abigail House, it was clear that the author had thought a lot about this world and had the details to expand upon it but it felt like they didn’t care enough about these characters to really go further than a quick look at what was happening with the war that was occurring in this town. In the end, a whole hell of a lot of potential with no read payoff. Unsure if I’ll try this author again.

Thoughts

I got this at my Barnes and Noble as a blind date with a book, because it said Clueless Meets The Craft.

I mean I guess it kind of had those vibes but more Craft, which I am fine with. But I didn't know that it was going to be a series. So now I feel like I need to read all of them because it was interesting.

I don't read a lot of graphic novels but I usually really like them. I think if you enjoy them and witchy vibes you'd like this one. I'll be reading the rest soon.

Picked it up based on the cover, and the art is pretty cool, but the story is just okay. It has the plot of a teen thriller but the pacing of a Scandinavian crime procedural. Not my favorite thing.
