There is absolutely no way to predict the infinite random forces in the world any of our choices will expose us to. How paralyzing would it be to even try?

what a beautifully written book about grief, self-forgiveness, putting yourself out there, and just, living your life to the fullest even when life sucks the soul out of you sometimes.

i’ll be honest, i didn’t go into this book with the highest expectations. i’ve read two books by KC and sure, i enjoyed them enough, but i thought this would just be a silly fun romance to pass the time. my lord, was i glad to be proven wrong.

this book made me so emotional; it took me off guard just how much i related to both emma and charlie. emma’s inability to forgive herself, perpetually keeping herself surrounded in a cocoon of familiarity and mundaneness because she deemed it the safest, and her capacity to love and sacrifice herself for the people around her. with charlie, it was his pessimism, his propensity to disregard or make light of things that are important to him because the alternative is to feel them deeply, and you know when you feel deeply, when it burns, it burns until there’s nothing left of you.

i enjoyed seeing how the romance unfolded between emma and charlie, because here’s the thing i remember enjoying about the last two books by KC: the characters’ relationship progression developed in a way that felt very organic and real to me. i felt the same here. there was really not much of that lusty thoughts spread out over several chapters thing that i hate. not that there’s anything inherently wrong with going with that route but i feel like authors tend to resort to that to indicate attraction between characters and disregard proper build-up. as a romance reader, this route comes off as if they’re use it as a cheat code or a shortcut to romance.

it’s definitely not the case with this book. both characters developed genuine friendship and grew to care for each other. again, it’s not that you wouldn’t be able to see them slowly developing sexual attraction for each other—you do, but it’s not in your face. the subtlety was appreciated because i love figuring out the exact moment my two main characters begin to fall for each other. it’s more fun that way!

of course, it’s not just the romance aspect that i liked. i also liked seeing both emma and charlie grow as individuals. it made me feel like i was also growing with them. overall, i enjoyed this book a lot. a solid 4.75 to 5 stars for me!
