a critical read for anyone working in philanthropy/wealth management, but also for anyone interested in healing. part memoir, part how-to, both unflinchingly critical and remarkably compassionate throughout.

This book plants many seeds! It's very interesting to think of how foundations forward white supremacy culture. Chapter Six was especially damning, sharing that foundations only need to payout 5% of their assets, while often the other 95% is invested in industries whose work completely undermines the mission of the foundation.

Late in this book Villanueva talks about medicines of different strengths, and acknowledges that he is not on board with activists who want to tear the system down and build something better in its place. His medicine throughout this book is of a very mild strength, but I get that this comes from generations of assimilation out of necessity for survival. He sees capitalism and institutions such as the police in the U.S. as worthy of reform, and is approaching decolonization work as an infiltrator and influencer within the upper echelon.

I am not the primary audience for this book, as stated in the introduction - Villanueva's profession is moving millions and millions of dollars around every day on behalf of the wealthy corporations and individuals who want to engage in "philanthropy" for whatever reasons.

I respect a lot of what he has to offer, and I believe in using a multitude of tactics, which includes those he engages in and encourages.

This book was a little hard to read because I found myself agreeing quite a bit with the criticisms of philanthropy. There are very deep rooted flaws in the philanthropic field. I’m also undecided on whether or not I agree with Villanueva’s assertion that the problem can be fixed, yet I wholeheartedly appreciate the 7 steps he lays out.

I think this is a must-read for everyone working in philanthropy and especially those in leadership and board positions!

Never thought I would be emotionally moved by a book about philanthropy. Wow. Very powerful and inspiring read that goes way beyond philanthropy.
