Definitely the most disturbing ghost story I've ever read. It's a meandering tale and doesn't go anywhere too fast and sometimes doesn't seem to really go anywhere at all. There are some moving passages that evoke strong reactions, but in general, the whole thing feels more literary than anything and that makes it hard to connect to. I could not lose myself in this story and as it is a story more about people rather than plot, I think that it is necessary to have a strong connection to the story/characters to be able to really appreciate it.
Also another case where the author should not narrate. She speaks too softly and sometimes mumbles through passages, which makes it hard to keep track of her stream-of-consciousness style of writing.
An aside: I've read two of Morrison's books now and I have to say, I do not understand her obsession with breast milk...

Read this book in college in a hauntings in Am lit course and loved it. Rereading it years later it is just as beautiful and tragic and gut wrenching. Would definitely recommend.
