Over the past 3 years, I’ve read Strange the Dreamer 4 times. Each time, with the intent to continue it into Muse of Nightmares and complete the duology. But the epicness of what happens at the end of book 1 crushes me each time and I feel so empty inside that I can’t go on. Well, I’ve finally done it. Thanks to my buddy read with a friend, I’ve FINALLY completed the duology and am 1 novella away from finishing Laini Taylor’s backlist.

After Lazlo touches the God’s Metal and learns that he is also Godspawn, he creates a dragon from the metal and flies to the tower with Sarai’s still warm body. Minya has already brought her ghost back, but Lazlo doesn’t understand why they can’t save her. It looks like the great evil of the story will in fact be Minya… until another unknown comes into the picture.

In her signature style, we get the story in alternating flashbacks from different characters, some alive and some already dead, to tell us what happened that put us into this situation. There will be death. There will be emotion. But there is also a great twist (also Laini Taylor’s signature) that left me thinking “How didn’t I think that was going to happen?” She also ties both worlds together from this book…. Which is

Wow!! A beautiful sequel! I loved getting to know the characters from the first book, especially Minya, in a different light. I just love the writing style so much. Nova was a really interesting new character and antagonist, it was fascinating to hear her story as well. It’s a shame that she had to go out the way she did, but I understand. I’m so glad that Minya was able to let go of all the spirits she had amassed, I feel like she is on the mend. I have come to think of all of these characters as friends, and I will definitely come back and read these again!

I just wanted this book over. It is one of those ones that doesn't go the way you want at all, and it aggravated me. The ending is good, but getting there was long and drawn out. I do like how it filled in the backstory about who the gods were, but that part actually interested me more than the main story. I also didn't love the drawn out love scenes that never actually eventuate into a great sex scene. It was just a drawn out dream sequence, like a ghost I guess lol. There are a lot of serious themes, but this book is a young teen book. I think I could have loved it, had there been more grit and serious adult themes. It is fine to talk about it happening, but we don't feel the real horror of what the 'gods' did to the people of Weep. There was one part that made me sad, but not enough for tears. It just needed more.

"I would have chosen you, if they had let me choose."

“But the truth has a way of seeping out. The mind can’t erase. It can only conceal, and concealed things are not gone.”

“This was a game that kill could not win—or, if it did, it would be an unbearable win that destroyed the very meaning of winning.”

“Have an enemy, be an enemy. Hate those who hate you. Hate them better. Hate them worse. Be the monster they dear the most. And whatever you can, and however you can, make them suffer.”
