I enjoyed this series of works and found the character of Shania especially engaging - I was immediately drawn into her life in the short story "Flee" and am curious to read [b:Rise of an African Elemental: A Dark Fantasy Novel|25627193|Rise of an African Elemental A Dark Fantasy Novel|Alicia McCalla|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1432932023s/25627193.jpg|45440017], which features her.

Additionally, I really liked the ending of Iniko's tale. It stood out as exciting and unexpected (though disturbing).

In this work, the theme of family is very important but not oversimplified; instead, we see that alongside the centrality of family is the indication that family and origin stories can't always be completely trusted. What our loved ones tell us may not always be the (whole) truth or may not always manifest as intended.

A great read! This tale of An African Elemental has an interesting storyline blending African myth with fantasy, and there is plenty of action and excitement! Definitely recommended.

Everything read as exposition. I didn't feel emotionally connected to the story or the characters. I didn't understand how the magic system in this world worked or how the different pantheons interacted. The writing was awkward in places, especially during a sex scene. There were some interesting concepts (gods I haven't read about before, obayifo, etc.), but it wasn't enough for me to enjoy this book.
