Interesting premise, worth the read. It is a little slow at some points but over all has something to say.

I'm not going to say a lot because I don't want to spoil the book.

My biggest issue that I had was the writing style. It was very confusing to me. We seemed to jump from character to character and their internal thoughts just on the whim. It made it hard to keep track of things and harder to sympathize/empathize with characters because I wasn't sure who was feeling what. It would happen mid-paragraph which was the most jarring.

The plot itself is predictable. I guessed most of what is to come.. but I don't know if that's because I have always believed the worst in people or just that it really was predictable. But it was still enjoyable.

Anyways.

I love animals. They deserve everything and I don't blame them for anything.

After reading so many amazing reviews for this book, I had high expectations and was looking forward to being swept away. Unfortunately, I was completely underwhelmed and frustrated but appreciative of the author’s story idea and intent.

The book had a great concept, albeit wordy execution. In places of high tension or action, the book is cluttered by its overly grandiose writing style. I felt as if Durham got a hold of a thesaurus and decided to pepper the book with obscure, unnecessary words that slowed the pacing of my reading down. I also found myself distracted by his many repetitive uses of these obscure words, to which I began counting how many times these words were used instead of paying attention to the scene at hand ("timbre", anyone?)

Additionally, the use of constant divine intervention/ Dues ex Machina was just as aggravating to me as the purple prose.

I really loved the concept of this book and loved the four main characters (the non-human ones), but it just felt bogged down with overt flowery language. I would've preferred it to have more back story, including when it came to the "hounds" and the main characters' history.

I found this book to be a unique story that got me hooked from the very beginning.

I just couldn’t stop reading and if it weren’t for the fact I had tons to do on the weekend I would have read this book in one day.

This is one I would read again in the future and I do recommend this book

I liked the story, but I found that the writing held the plot back. It was adventurous, but overly snobby in the way the story was told. I probably would've DNF'd this book if it was part of a book club.
