Eighteen months have passed since Deputy Chief Jess Harris Burnett put an end to serial killer Eric Spears. Now someone is sending messages to Jess in an attempt to imitate Spears and reenact his heinous crimes. Jess and her major crimes unit must once again “play the game” and find him fast, before it’s too late for them all.
This is an incredible short story and a great introduction to the new Faces of Evil spinoff series. An action-packed, whirlwind of a story. and one that you don't want to miss out on. Highly recommended reading.

Debra Webb's Faces of Evil is one of my favorite murder/mystery series. Over the last couple years, I've grown quite attached to Jess, Dan, and all the rest. Especially Buddy Corlew, for some bizarre reason, but there it is. I love the wacky man.

I liked the way this novella worked as a transition between the 'old' Faces of Evil novels and what are to become the 'new' ones through Harlequin Intrigue. It tied up some loose ends and opened up a whole new series of stories without rehashing too much. September 1st cannot get here fast enough, I need the next book for reasons. Mostly because Buddy. But see above.

Is it bad that I was hoping the entire time that it wasn't really a copycat and that Eric Spears had returned from the dead? It is? Oh. I was totally obsessed with him during the first several novels and had this weird shippy thing going on with him and Jess, even though I knew it wouldn't have ended well had she fallen for him. Eh, what can I say? The Player was smart, charming, and completely screwed up. He made an excellent bad guy.
